MINUTES
December 4, 2012
The meeting of the Reading Board of Health came to order at 7:12 pro in the Mayor's
Conference Room of Melrose City Hall at 562 Main Street Melrose, MA. Present were
Board members Barbara Meade, David Singer, Andrew Friedmann and staff Ruth Clay,
Kara Showers, Maureen Buzby as well as Melrose Board of Health members Maurine
Garipay and Frank Brincheiro and Wakefield Board of Health members Ann McGonigle
Santos, Elaine Silva and Laurel Gourville. Mayor Rob Dolan attended part of the
meeting.
Health Director's Report
• Clay gave information about the recent activities of Wakefield and Melrose in
regards to zoning amendments which would prohibit medical marijuana
dispensing sites. She reported on a regional meeting held the day before in
Danvers hosted by the new statewide prevention center Mass TAPP that was
attended by a number of substance abuse prevention coalition staff from the
northeast area.
Other business and items not reasonably anticipated at the time of posting:
• Mayor Dolan welcomed everyone to the joint meeting and congratulated the
Boards of Health on the completion of the first year of the three community
arrangement. He noted how pleased he was with the successes of the group.
Presentation about the Mass in Motion grant
Kara Showers gave a five slide power point presentation about the Mass in Motion grant
received by Melrose and Wakefield. Clay noted that Reading had received a separate
smaller grant that funded a community needs assessment, the results of which she would
send electronically to the Reading Board of Health and place on the website.
Presentation about the Tobacco Grant
Maureen Buzby passed around examples of the newer "Other Tobacco Products" which
she had purchased in the seven towns which are part of the regional tobacco coalition.
She passed out a copy of work which had been completed the first year of the grant and
discussed current efforts in Melrose and Malden with elderly housing complexes to assist
them in becoming smoke free.
