School Council Minutes 11 -8 -11
Behavioral Health — Focus at RMHS has been placed on helping students understand the
importance of finding a balance between academics, extra - curricular activities and sleep.
School offers a Decisions class freshman year that focuses on this topic. RMHS may be looking
at expanding this class to other years. Students had mixed feelings because it would add one
more class into their already busy schedule.
Behavioral Health Task Force met in the summer. They came up with a variety of
recommendations that were passed out to the Council.
Thoughts discussed by council regarding stress:
A. How do we find out what causes stress of students? Surveys, YRBS, advisory?
B. How do we educate parents, students and teachers about the causes and strategies
to deal with stress? It was discussed at times the adults are adding to the kids stress
without even knowing it.
C. Kids are under a lot of pressure due to college admissions. Every grade counts,
allowing parents access to grades can sometimes be stressful to kids.
Action Steps:
A. Parent education forums, stress, college expectations, etc.
B. Making connections between upperclassman and underclassman as well as past
graduates with high school students. Create a place where students can talk and
learn from others.
C. PTO meeting —possibly talk more about the topic at that meeting.
