Review and acceptance of the April 11 minutes was placed on hold.
Camille thanked the Committee for recognition of a tree planting in her name, and the name
plate on the plaque, which is now placed on the wall in Town Hall, near the elevator. Discussion
involved where the trees would be needed and planted, working with Tree Warden and
Economic Development Commission. Tree planting best in fall. Special thanks to Michelle,
Bo and Gina for plaque.
Discussion of Earth Day, sponsored by the Committee, held at Mattera Cabin Saturday, April 21.
Police detail not needed, as members of Committee donned yellow jackets and directed traffic.
No Board of Health involvement, since food being offered to volunteers only. Other groups
involved were the Town Forest, Conservation, Garden Club, DPW (water conservation),
RMLD, Walkable Reading, and Girl Scouts. Trails committee led walks into the Town Forest,
showing the new trail improvements. Our Committee exhibit featured the tree planting program,
the Green Business award, and business paper recycling. Good publicity and good attendance.
Discussion of the Green Business Award to the Swiss Bakery centered on the need quantify the
improvements (National Grid and RMLD audits and water records from town Hall). Problems
of a general format for evaluation were discussed. The removal of baking ovens from the
Reading site is especially problematic for Swiss Bakers. Advantage of filming the audits was
discussed, versus a staged presentation for RCTV program.
Discussion of Business Paper Recycling centered on Reading Co -op Bank land for recycling bin
- no drive -up window and possible easement. Plans for M.F. Charles Building need to be
finalized before a bin can be located by the town.
Planning for Family and Friends Day, Saturday, June, 11 led to a theme of Forests of the World
(Lungs of the World), connecting the "Taking Root for the Future" with global warming.
Children game(s) would be coordinated with Ray, but might include locating the world's
principle forests on the map, and pinning the country name on the spot. And/Or, the leaves of
the common trees of our area could be cut out and associated with the tree name.
Prizes and drawings were discussed as follows:
Donation of a tree by the Town (Michelle will ask Peter H) - -Value $300, cost of tree
planted by town anyway, plus the cost of engraving name plate.
Donation of root trees by Eric's or Calareso (Ron)
Donation of garden tool kit by Home Depot (Ron)
Tent - Michelle
Table(s) - RMLD, Laurie Ann (Ron, back -up)
Chairs -All
Set up after 9:30AM, event 11AM to 3 PM
Discussion by Town of plans for striping of Main Street pavement might allow for bike path.
