HomeMy WebLinkAbout1983-12-08 Board of Public Works MinutesBoard of Public Works Meetinq of December 8, 1983 Page I A meeting of the Board of Public Works convened in Room 16, Municipal Building at 7:55 P.M. Present were Chairman Wood, Secretary Barker, Board Members Polychrones, Griffin and Hampson. The Board first met with members of the Search Committee, who gave the Board their latest report on the hiring of a new Superintendent for the DPW. Chairman Wood presented the background on the Search Committee and pointed out that the committee consisted of the following five people: Richard Ogden - Reading resident; Gerald Fiore - Reading resident; Dick Boutiette - Superintendent of Wakefield D.P.W.; Newt Sweet - Superintendent of Danvers D.P.W. and Bob MacEwen - Superintendent of Needham D.P.W. Mr. Fiore gave the Board a report and stated the job was advertised in four newspapers, including minority newspapers. He stated the Committee received 27 resumes, have interviewed the qualified applicants and have narrowed the list to six, in alphabetical order: 1. William R. Bergeron 2. David Butterfield 3. Anthony Fletcher 4. Everett Kennedy S. Edward D. McIntire, Jr. 6. Richard Warrington Mr. Fiore stated each of these applicants were interviewed for 30 minutes, and he presented the Board with a written evaluation of each. He stated the Committee tried to remain totally objective and independent by writing separate evaluations. He stated the final choice for Superintendent now rests with the Board of Public Works. Board of Public Works Meeting of December 8, 1983 Page 2 Chairman Wood thanked the members of the Search Committee emphatically for their time and assistance. Assistant Superintendent Edward D. McIntire, Jr. joined the meeting at 8'20 P.M. The Board next met with members of the Recreation Committee at 8:20 P.M. Present were John O'Keefe, Chairman, Jerry Donovan, Secretary and Facility Subcommittee Chairman Frank Driscoll. The Committee presented the Board with a list of requests for improvements and maintenance items for various playgrounds in the Town they would like included in the FY-86 Budget of the Board of Public Works: 1. Continue field development at Birch Meadow a. Sprinkler system b. Completely level c. Grassed In the amount of $10,000.00. 2. Construct a four (4) foot fence at Washington Park: a. Around tot lot b. Continue fence from tot lot to the existing fence in center field, with a ten (10) foot opening at the existing path into the field area. For an estimate of $3,200.00. 3. Erect a new backstop at Washington Park a. Thirty (30) feet wide by twelve (12) feet high with an overhang. b. Move the backstop closer to home plate. Amount to be spent - $1972S.00. Board Of Public Works Meeting of December 8, 1983 Page 3 � - 4. Erect new backstop at Birch Meadow: a. Tennis court field b. Thirty (30) feet wide by twelve (12) feet high, no overhang. Amount to be spent $1,000.00. S. Improve and upgrade lights at Birch Meadow Lighted Softball Field; The cost of this is $17,000 - $18,000. The Recreation Committee is asking the B.P.W. for $12,000.00 as the Men's Softball League has pledged $5,000.00 towards this project. 6. Sprinkler system at Sturges and Barrows fields. The amount to be spent is not known at this time. 7. Players benches at Sturges and Barrows fields -The Reading Youth Softball League is willing to pledge $200.00 towards having these benches erected. B. Light another tennis court at Barrows. The cost of this is very prohibitive. 9. Improve tot lot areas around all playgrounds - new equipment for these areas and equipment for children ages 2 - 6, most of the existing equipment is for older children.
