A meeting of the Board of Public Works convened in Room 127,
Reading Memorial High School, Reading, Ma. at 7:00 P.M. Present were
Chairman Wood, Secretary Fallon, Board Members Polychrones and Griffin and
' Assistant Superintendent Edward D. McIntire' Jr.
It was moved, seconded and voted 4:0 to accept the minutes of the
Board of Public Works meeting of April 4, 1983 as written.
Mr. Barker joined the meeting at 7:06 P.M.
It was moved, seconded and voted 4:0:1 (Mr. Barker abstaining) to
approve the minutes of the Board of Public Works meeting of April 11, 1983
as written.
It was moved, seconded and voted 5:0 to grant permission to the
Campfire Girls for the use of Memorial Park for their May Day festivities
on May 18, 1983 from 1:30 P.M. to 3:30 P.M. subject to the usual
stipulations:
~� l. No alcoholic beverages may be served in the public
2. Proper police and insurance protection must be
procured.
3. The area must be broom clean at the conclusion of
the event.
4. Our contract with B.F.I. for rubbish collection
includes a provision that the park barrels be emptied
by them. We ask that you remove any trash generated
by this group in order to leave the barrels free for
the normal weekly accumulation.

S. Please notify the Reading Fire Department on the day
of the event and apprise them of the fact that you
will be barbequing.

It was moved, seconded and voted 5:0 to grant permission to the
First Congregational Church to close off and occupy a portion of Sanborn
Street between Lowell Street and Woburn Street on Saturday, September 24,
1983 from 7:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and to table action on their request to
hang a banner in Reading Center over Route 28 until the Department further
investigates the matter.
It was movedy seconded and voted 5:0 to table action on the
request of Mr. Earle B. Kaufman of Boston Stove Company until after the
adjournment of the Annual Town Meeting.
It was moved, seconded and voted S:O to grant permission to Mr.
Donald F. Johnston, President and Treasurer o� Sunrise Homes, Inc. to
connect a private drain line to the existing drainage located in Boyce
Street as indicated on a plan of Lot 26, Boyce Street, Reading, Mass.
dated April 1983. Mr. Johnston has submitted a Release of Damages for

this drain connection, the document being dated April 15, 1983.
The Board adjourned temporarily at 7�2O P.M. to meet as the Board
of Survey.
The meeting reconvened at 7:2S P.M.
It was moved, seconded and voted S:O to accept the letter from
the Board of Assessors regarding the reorganization of the Board of
Assessors as a point of information.
It was moved, seconded and voted S:O to appoint Douglass L.
Barker to the Space Needs Committee.
The Board reviewed a letter dated April 14, 1983 from Mr. Ralph
L. Lake which requested the Town of Reading to supply engineering services
for the extension of a sewer main from the sidewalk area on Main Street
through a proposed easement to Lafayette Road,
It was moved, seconded and voted -3:1:1 (Mrs. Wood opposed and Mr.
Fallon abstaining) to respond to Mr. Lake by letter advising him that the

work load of the Department is such that it would be impossible in the
near future for the Department to undertake this project and advise him to
hire a private engineer to perform the work.
It was moved, seconded and voted S:O to accept the report from
the D.E.Q.E. Lawrence Experiment Station regarding trihalomethane testing
results dated March 11, 1983 as a point of information.
The meeting adjourned at 7:38 P.M.
