READING PUBLIC SCHOOLS <br />Reading, Massachusetts <br />SCHOOL COMMITTEE OPEN HEARING <br />OPEN HEARING MINUTES JANUARY 27, 1992 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />Chair Barbara Philbrick called School Committee to order at 7:25 <br />p.m. in the Parker Middle School Auditorium. All members were <br />present with the exception of Mary Williams. Also present were <br />Superintendent Robert J. Munnelly and Assistant Superintendent <br />Lynn M. Bak. <br />Chair Philbrick opened the meeting by introducing Principal John <br />Delaney, who in turn thanked President Spignesi and Vice President <br />Langone for their great support and that of Parker parents <br />organized as the Parker P.T.O. <br />PT(_HT.Tr_PT <br />Dr. Delaney then introduced Parker faculty member Joan Clifford <br />who would give a "Highlight" about the foreign language program of <br />the middle schools of Reading. She reviewed the philosophical <br />basis of the program and on the teaching methodology used in the <br />classrooms. In the course of her presentation, she demonstrated <br />the type of activities used with students, and exhibited some of <br />the teacher -made materials which are a key part of the coursework. <br />OPEN HEARING AND DISCUSSION <br />At this time the Chair opened up the meeting for comments from the <br />audience. <br />. A parent asked about putbacks. School Committee members <br />explained the putback list and the process it will take in <br />anticipation of money becoming available. <br />Another question raised by a parent was in regard to Latin as a <br />basic requirement for students in middle school. The Committee <br />advised that this was discussion of a study committee years ago. <br />A citizen commented about the importance of home economics and <br />industrial arts to middle school students. <br />Praise for the Foreign Language program was expressed from <br />another parent, who also asked if Foreign Language could be a <br />two year program. <br />Principal Delaney commented that Parker facilities are in need <br />of upgrading. <br />Another comment from a parent was in regard to standardized <br />testing school by school. <br />
