September 22, 20 10 Reading Advisory Committee on Cities for Climate Protection Program
Committee Notes for September 22, 2010. 7PM (Next Meeting - October 13 at Town Hall)
Present were Tracy Sopchak, Tony Capobianco, Joan Boegel, Gina Snyder, Dave Williams and Stephanie Anderberg.
Meeting opening - Acting Chair Tracy Sopchak opened the meeting.
Minutes - The minutes of the September 9 meeting were approved, with a correction in the address of the
- 13MARC house correcting the street name from Ash to Hopkins.
Other Business to add to agenda - Tracy has new employment and will ask to change from 1 it 21
voting member to associate member in the committee. Gina brought copies of the recycling prog
changes brochure that Michele helped to design. There is an idea to have a student conte-t to name the Deleted: x
character in the logo.
Home Energy Efficiency Actions - HEFT: Joan sent the committee members an email copy of
the written assessment of the EMARC home from the September 10 visit, b~- Agaci.I_ey__ScI"iu_li'n'an sand.
Jason 1 avic)r of Call bridge I l1 I _I`. Some maintenance items were noted which are outside of our
.purview but helpful for EMARC to know about, Some insulation oddities were found. Gina has some
photos. The attic has inadequate insulation and large holes. Audrey suggested a Mass Save energy audit
which allows them to get substantial savings on insulation. The Mass Save audit is a long process but
worth it for the savings, so we might not do the attic work during our barnraising. Audrey has also
provided a lot of detail on a needed marterials list. EMARC can ask Jared from RMLD to do an audit as
well. Blower Door Parties: Still having trouble finding a host, Joe Green may have some contacts in
Reading. Tracy has also found some possible volunteers to host a blower door party and/or help at the
barnraising. An RCTV powerpoint slide might also help, The third EMARC house could be a possible
site for a blower door party.
Business 1-2-3 Pledge - Gina talked to the Chamber at the fall Faire and found that they would
like to have a program more so than a presentation.
Climate Outreach Programs - The Library panel discussion has been rescheduled to
November 16. No updates on Sustainability workshop or Dianne Dumanoski. Tracy and Joan will each
forward an email regarding local 350.org events, one from the Wakefield group and one from HEET,
Solid Waste Management and Recycling - The Green Sense article about the drug take back
event ran in the Chronicle, The event coincides with a hazardous waste collection in Wakefield which is
-)pen to Reading residents. In addition to the one-day event, unused prescriptions can be dropped off any
Jme at the Reading police department. No updates on the Solid Waste Master Plan but it could make a
good Green Sense topic. The comment period was currently open, and comments must be submitted in
writing. No updates on the school programs. There was a continued discussion on the new trash and
recycling program guidelines and about a negative Boston Globe column on recycling.
Climate Action Plan Updates -School outreach no update.
