A meeting of the Recreation Committee was held on June 10, 1992
in the Arnold Berger Room at Reading Town Hall, 16 Lowell St.,
Reading, Ma. Committee members present included Chairman Joseph
Giordano, Edward Hanley, John Pacino, Steven Sullivan, Tom Zaya,
Tom McGrath, Lorraine Salter, and Fred Conover. Also in_atten-
dance was Recreation Supervisor, Lesley Wexler. Gary Roberts ar-
rived late.
At 7:34, an Open Hearing was called to order regarding the light-
ing of the Practice Field. Joe Giordano read the legal notice,
after which Sharon Drillio., a representative of Pop Warner
presented the Light Proposal. She stated that her organization
would like lights erected at the practice football field due to
the current field they are using (Castine) is said to be very
swampy and buggy.
The cost, Ms Drillio stated, would be $473/pole. Many neighbors
expressed concerned about the lights shining in their houses and
who woulld pay for the lights.
Mr. Giordano stated that Pop Warner would pay, and the Light
Dept. would bill them directly.
Mr. Dave Blanchard, a representative from soccer, was concerned
about their field time at the area. Bob Drillio of Pop Warner
said they would not take their field space.
J. Pacino asked Sharon Drillio if Pop Warner could practice at
Austin Prep. Sharno said no because it is occupied.
J. Pacino asked what the next step would be to approve the light-
ing. J. Giordano said it would next have to go to the Town
Manager and then to the Selectmen. The Open Hearing closed offi-
cially at 8:10.
A break in the agenda occured at 8:12pm. A motion was made by
Tom McGrath to table motion on the Public Hearing due to a new
Recreation Board coming in July. This was seconded by Mrs. Sal-
ter. Mr. Giordano said he would like more specifics on the
project, and Fred Conover said he would like to see a cost out,
and how it would be covered. The motion passed 5-0-1.
Joe Giordano, Chairman, said he will request Peter Hechenbleikner
to ask Light Dept. to give more information. Fred Conover made a
motion to have the Town Manager ask the Light Dept to give Pop
Warner more information. This was seconded by John Pacino and
passe unanimously with a vote of 6-0-0.
1
