t
Recreation Minutes
May 19,1993
The meeting of the Recreation Committee came to order at 7:30pm
Wednesday, May 19, 1993 in the Berger Room of the Town Hall.
Present at the meeting were members, Kate Kaminer, John Pacino,
Gordon Richards, Lorraine Salter, Ed Hanley, Fred Conover, As-
sociate Members Tom Zaya, Supervisor Steve Kajander and guests,
Sharon and Robert Drillio.
A meeting was being held to vote on two issues which have time
tables that need action before our June meeting. There was no
vote taken at the last meeting do to a lack of a quorum.
Issue I
Kate began with a brief outline of the fence proposal; A
chain linkfence in front of the benches at the Sturgis Park ball
field to protect players and coaches from foul balls. Since last
Tuesday's Recreation meeting, Kate has talked to Mary Robillard,
Commissioner.of Women's Softball, about the need for a protective
fence. At present time the league feels the money required for
the fences should go into other league areas. At this point
Sharon and Robert Drillio offered to pay for the entire fence
project as a way of giving back to the Town of Reading. Lorraine
Salter, speaking on behalf of one of the field's abutters, Gordie
Clark; indicated the Clark family would not support the fence
proposal, but would support the benches being moved back 10 to 12
feet or better fitting helmets for the kids. Fred Conover sug-
gested that with the benches moved back there might not be a need
for protective fences. Fred made a motion to have DPW move the
benches back as soon as possible and then see if fences are in
fact needed. John Pacino seconded the motion. All in favor.
Issue II
Our involvement with Summerfest: A "Pie in the face" booth
plus a concert to run during Saturday before the fireworks
show, was widely endorsed. John Pacino made the motion and Ed
seconded it. All were in favor.
Other Business:
Gordon Richards extended a verbal invitation from Jerry
Pothier for all to attend the Opening Night of the Challenger
Little League this Friday at 6:00 on the Parker Upper Field.
Bases, hats aand $200. from Youth Soccer has been donated thus
far. The parents of the kids are extremely happy and very en-
thusiastic seeing how happy the young players are.
1
