Board of Library Trustees
Minutes of Meetings August 6,1998
Present: Mrs. Maria Silvaggi, Chair; Mr. Stephen Conner; Ms. Cherrie Dubois,
Ms. Donna InDelicato, Mr. Richard Ogden, Dr. Christine Redford.
Absent: No one
The Board of Trustees meetings was called to order at 7:02 p.m.
The minutes of the June meeting were approved.
Regarding the finance report, Mrs. Silvaggi asked some questions about
various aspects of the budget. The report was accepted after Mr. Conner's
motion was seconded.
While discussing the statistical report, we were informed that paperback
circulation is up and that Hot Off the Press is working well. One complaint
registered by a patron is that there is not enough esoteric material in the
library and that some classics are not part of the collection; Seven Years Before
the Mast, fore example, was unavailable. We were also advised about the
possibilities, indeed, realities, of nationwide interlibrary loan (ILL).
Mrs. Silvaggi reported that she would not be in town for the Budget Council
meeting of September 10.
Power to the people, but not necessarily power to the library: the building
seems to be experiencing some power problems; an amp monitor has been
put on the fuses to see if the cause can be found. We hope for a solution,
perhaps via Peter, if the problems persist. The building needs to be upgraded
to 600 amps (from 400), with an eventual increase to 1200; this work would be
done on a Sunday. To help work around the problem, some electrical
equipment has been turned off so we won't have a power failure again. Ms.
Hanley thinks the HVAC installation may be the culprit, as electrical failures
never happened prior to that.
Ms. Hanley reminded us that the library will be closed September 10 for Staff
Development Day at the Textile Museum in Lowell; the library will reopen
for patrons at 6 p.m. On September 21, the staff will host a little fete for the
trustees.
Karen and Peter Brown are the new presidents of the Friends.
New liaison assignments were made this evenings:
Friends Dr. Redford
Staff Mr. Conner and Ms. Dubois
