Board of Library Trustees <br />Minutes of Meeting - September 21,1987 <br />Children's Room - Reading Public Library - 8:00 p.m. <br />Present: Ms. Cherrie Dubois, chair; Mrs. Elia Dangelmaier; Mr. William <br />Diamond; Mr. Robert Fields; Dr. Christine Redford. <br />.Absent: Mrs. Carol Beckwith. <br />Ms. Dubois called the meeting to order at 8:15 p.m. <br />Statistical reports: The contribution of the children's summer reading <br />club to the circulation statistics was applauded. Ms. Flannery <br />reported that she will recommend purchase of an IBM PC-based <br />circulation back-up system when it is offered for sale. <br />Director's report: The resignation of Mark Nicholls, custodian, was noted. <br />The Department of Public Works will advertise to fill the <br />position. Ms. Flannery emphasized that although Muf Shaw has <br />switched to part-time, we have not lost any positions or hours. <br />Minutes: Mrs. Dangelmaier moved to accept the minutes as'written; Dr. <br />Redford seconded. The motion passed. <br />Communications: 1) Ms. Dubois read a letter from Edmund Smith in <br />appreciation of the handicapped railing. 2) MLTA is looking for <br />trustee liaisons, and help with the revision of the trustee <br />handbook. Mr..Diamond moved that the library pay for trustees to <br />join MLTA for a year on a trial basis. Mr. Fields seconded. The <br />motion passed. 3) MLA announced its second legislative day, <br />October 7. 4) $58.22 has been received as the final installment <br />of the Municipal Equalization Grant. 5) EMRLS annual meeting of <br />the advisory council will be held on October 28. Ms. Flannery <br />was designated the library's representative. 6) A letter was <br />received from Ms. Nancy Bederian regarding the Harry Kurchian <br />fund. Ms. Bederian was distressed that the money had been spent <br />primarily on large-print books rather than on books about the <br />Middle East as she had requested. Ms. Dubois suggested that <br />books purchased on the Middle East for the next year be <br />designated in Mr. Kurchian's name. Mr. Diamond offered to write <br />a letter to Ms. Bederian to see if he could resolve this problem. <br />7) The Garden Club asked for an advance of the $200.00 <br />appropriated by the trustees for Christmas decorations. It was <br />decided that the club should advance the money and be reimbursed. <br />Unfinished business: 1) Ms. Flannery reported that it is against town <br />policy to pay for employees' comestibles; therefore, the town <br />will no longer pay for the spring water that is bought for the <br />staff's cooler. Ms. Dubois requested that Ms. Flannery check <br />with the staff to see if they would be willing to pay for it <br />themselves. <br />2) The Reading Women's Club has donated a filmstrip viewer in <br />memory of Gregory Giordano. The club has adopted a policy of <br />donating a book to the Children's Room whenever one of their <br />members has a baby. <br />1 <br />
