July 24, 2006
Approved August 25, 2006, 5-0
WEST STREET HISTORIC DISTRICT COMMISSION MINUTES'
Town Hall, 16 Lowell Street, Reading, MA 01867
Michael T. Gray, AIA, Chairman, Susan Patterson, Vice-Chairman, Kathryn Greenfield, Secretary, Dorothy Casolaro, David Kroh-"
Members present: Members absent:
Michael Gray Dave Kruh
Kathryn Greenfield
Susan Patterson
Dorothy Casolaro
The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m., with a quorum present.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of May 8, 2006 and June 12, 2006 were reviewed and approved without changes, by
a vote of 4-0. Susan will prepare the minutes of the meeting of July 6, 2006.
General Business
➢ The Commission discussed the application received for work at 247 West Street, and
determined, by a vote of 4-0, that a hearing is not necessary due to the project's
insubstantial effect, its size and scope, and the fact that the Commission had no
recommendations to make beyond the information submitted in the application. KG will
e-mail the notice-to-abutters to Maureen Knight for mailing. MG will call Maureen with
the heads-up, and will call the applicant to inform him that he has to wait 10 days.
➢ It was noted that the notice that is sent to abutters, informing them when a hearing is not
necessary on a project, should include language to the effect that "after 10 days shall
elapse, a Certificate may be issued."
➢ The Commission discussed the application received for a fence at 157 West Street, and
determined, by a vote of 3-0-1, that a hearing is not necessary (DC abstained, as she is
possibly an abutter). KG will e-mail notice to Maureen for mailing.
➢ By a vote of 4 - 0, the following officers were elected for the upcoming year:
o Susan Patterson, Chairman
o Michael Gray, Vice Chairman
o Dorothy Casolaro, Secretary
➢ DC met with the woman who makes signs. While the Town Manager has indicated his
desire for the District's sign to be the same as other red, black and gold signs in Town,
the Commission expressed a desire for the District's sign to be similarly designed, but,
perhaps only white, black & gold. DC will have a drawing @ the next mtg.
Next Meeting
The next regular meeting of the WSHDC is scheduled for August 14, 2006 at 7:00 p.m.
