Reading Public Library
Board of Trustees
Budget Council Minutes
June 9,1999
8:00 PM
Present: Stephen Conner, Cherrie Dubois, Richard Ogden, Christine Redford,
and Maria Silvaggi.
The meeting was called to order by Carol Grimm at 8:00 PM. State Aid
numbers were reviewed. Town Accountant Richard Foley explained the budget
figures, stating that new growth revenues were less than expected
(-$111,000). A discussion followed concerning how to spend the $248,880 in
State Aid. A decision was made to spend the $248,880 with a priority to
spend $51,820 on the Vocational school and retro contracts. The Finance
Committee's recommendation was to spend remaining funds by distributing
$100,000 for the schools, $15,000 for library materials and $15,000 for
police training. Selectmen proposed amending the finance committee's
recommendations by increasing the library to $20,000 and the police to
$25,000. This proposal will reduce the school budget by $20,000. Selectmen
will establish a Special Town Meeting to be held in late June. The meeting was
adjourned at 11:00 PM.
