Reading Historical Commission Minutes <br />14 November 2000 <br />Attending: Virginia Adams <br />Wilbar Hoxie <br />Clay Jones <br />Sharlene Santo <br />Jerry Kaper <br />Roberta Sullivan <br />Louise Sandberg <br />Judith Mitchell <br />Katherine Greenfield <br />Bob Brown <br />1. Called to order 7:40. <br />2. October 3 minutes approved. <br />3. Bob Brown again visited us to tell us that there are 5 pipe organs in Reading, 4 <br />in churches and 1 in the Masonic temple. He is doing research on pipe organs in <br />order to categorize them. He gave us the inventory that he has compiled. Bob <br />suggested that a concert at one of these institutions would be a good activity for first <br />night. The members of the commission suggested the Reading Cultural Council and <br />the Clergyman Council as good resources. <br />4. 25 Auburn St.: The house has come down. Virginia took pictures. The items <br />we wanted are in Dave. Barrett's barn. Clay volunteered to pick up and keep the <br />items. He will also write an article about the house for the papers. <br />5. No news is good news about the web site. <br />6. We sold 28 copies of At Wood End at the polls. There will be an article in the <br />papers. Members were scheduled to sell the books at St. Athanasius fair. The letter <br />has gone out to the realtors to encourage them to buy books for their clients. Clay, <br />Kathy, and Virginia volunteered to distribute the books to stores (Charles, Hitching <br />Post, and Sense of Wonder). <br />7. Treasurer's Report: Roberta purchased some supplies. The bills from Redstone <br />Camera has come in. Totals are General Fund: 1,199 and Special Revenue: <br />6,382.23. Clay purchased for the Archives: Preserving Historic New England. <br />8. Oral Histories: Sally Hoyt, Betty Cronin, and Dick Curtis were suggested as <br />contacts. <br />9. Town meeting discussed the Community Preservation Act. The state has <br />enacted it. It is up to each community to enact its own. Copies with questionnaire <br />were handed out to members. <br />10. Police Station: The old police station building is can the Massachusetts <br />inventory. Roberta will find out if a demolition permit has been pulled. If it has, a <br />hearing will be needed. <br />11. Members received their photos of commercial properties and began to label <br />them with addresses. The members suggested properties to include on the inventory. <br />Members were encouraged to research the properties they considered worthwhile <br />and report at next months meeting. Criteria: original form, history versus architecture, <br />stylistic- good representation, well-know architect. Photos were separated into <br />potential inventory properties and rejects. <br />12.
