Reading Advisory Committee on Cities for Climate Protection Program
Committee Notes for April 12, 2006
Present were Stephanie Anderberg, Michele Benson, Ron Daddario, Gina Snyder, and Tracy Sopchak.
Votes: Meeting minutes from 3-22-06 were accepted.
-The intern interview(s) will be set up by Gina and Tracy, probably by phone. Ron will check references.
The questions will include candidate availability (we have a lot of flexibility), computer capabilities, why
they are interested in the opportunity and why it is a good fit for them.
-Committee decided to continue attempted communication with the High School Science program and
possibly scouting projects.
-Michele has been talking with Energy Services and collecting information, but needs a base year to start.
After discussion, the committee decided that the CCP database should begin with the base year of 2000.
-The update on the grant is that four RMLD trucks were funded in the retrofit program. Peter will be
coordinating with Vinny Cameron on getting this done. We haven't heard about, the trees Tor South Main.
-Town meeting begins on April 24 and Tracy will do a presentation for the committee. Several members
plan to attend to give support.
-The committee decided to have an extra meeting next week to develop an instructional motion to have
Town Meeting instruct town committees to consider greening of developments that propose to come to
town.
-Ron will get guidelines from Peter.
-Michele will look up bylaws and zoning from other towns.
Whatever parameters are mentioned should be relative to Reading's progress rather than a static percent
(e.g., could require 70% Green Power, but if Reading manages to get to 80% Green Power then the new
development would be required to have a lower percentage than the town, and we wouldn't want them to be
stuck behind any progress the town might make.)
-Follow up on the Green Energy proposal at the RMLD is that the department will come back to the Board
at the June meeting with a proposal for Green Power choices, which if the Board approves, will required
filing with the DTE and 30-days for them to review.
We also still want to follow up with the concept of set-aside funding options for the High School as
was mentioned at the March Light Board meeting.
-Ron will also be contacting Hullwindorg to get information on wind mills.
-The 1-2-3 pledge is still being developed (3 areas:-Transportation, Waste and Energy). We want to have it
ready by Town Day (don't know what day in June). Along with this, the committee discussed the re-useable
canvas bags. Also, the possibility of having The Home Depot or Lowes or both participate in a campaign to
get people to switch to Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs by having a sale on CFL and other energy saving
options such as clotheslines was discussed, but no decision was made.
-Tracy will re-check the PR on CFLs and send to Stephanie to email to local news outlets.
-Stephanie-will work on options for a logo - the Welcome to Reading sign with a globe nestled in it and the
Church on the Common's steeple with a globe where the clock resides.
-The Logo could also be used as part of the development of a program to recognize
energy savings by business with a window tag similar to what Cambridge MA t, aim
does. Image example to righter
-Peter Hechenbleikner gave Ron's name as the contact for a visit from Walkable IJ
Communities, and Ron will be contacting them,Several people wanted to
participate and said that Friday would be the preferred day,
-On April 22, the HBO special on climate change will air. The committee will try to get a copy of the show
(Tracy and Ron pre-viewed it at a UCS meeting April 11a`.)
The possibility of using the video with the High School science program was discussed along with the
potential to develop a relationship with students through the department.
Rom
.indicated that he would let the Town Manager, Selectmen and Editor of the paper know about the
special.
Potluck has changed to April 2861 at 6 PM
