Reading Advisory Committee on Cities for Climate Protection Program
Committee Notes for May 10, 2006
Present were Stephanie Anderberg, Michele Benson, Ron Daddario,, Ray Porter and Tracy Sopchak.
Votes: Meeting minutes from 4-26-06 were accepted.
-The intern, Emily Kumple has accepted the position and requested that she may have a two-week
vacations period. She is not expected to be back to Massachusetts until June and at this time the
Committee does not have a starting date.
-A Short discussion on the wind map that Gina sent out. Ray viewed the map and felt that Reading did
not show any areas highly suitable for wind turbine. It was agreed that costly feasibility studies should not
be done unless they look somewhat promising. We will keep searching for energy saving alternative that
will work in NE-investigate Geothermal Heat Pumps.
-Discussion on the shopping tote was held. The members agreed on.the heart shape encompassing the
earth with blue exterior and green world. With that in mind, the members.thought it would be better to
have a two-color print on the totes. The group would like the email address on the bag. We would wait
and discuss it further with Stephanie and get her opinion. Michele showed the group some energy
conservation booklets that could be inserted into the totes. It also looks promising that the RMLD will
provide CFL for the CCP's Town Day booth.
-The members discussed the CFLs. Ron would like to get something in conjunction with Home Depot
and Town Day. Possible certificates to get free or discounted CFLs. He is going to speak with them.
-Tracy reviewed the RNCEC's web site. She is very pleased with the numbers used per pledge item,
however, questioned if the pledges should have consistent reduction amounts? The consensus was no,
they are fine as is. Some pledges are of greater value than others (e.g. replacing a vehicle to a light
bulb).
-Tracy is still waiting for Ron, Ray and Michele's bios-they are coming along.
-Tracy would like to place a clip art on the site to indicate Reading's CO2 emissions now and how it
decreases as people pledge. She would like to work with a thermostat and the earth. Tracy asked
Michele to see if she could work something out with the thermostat clip art.
-Tracy asked the group if they would take a topic off the pledge list and do a press release write-up.
-We need to get a permanent web address and not use Tracy when up and running. Stephanie has
spoke with the Town, however, has not gotten a call back. Stephanie call again.
Michele told the members that the RMLD would not have the Green Energy Program approved until after
Town Day. However, Tracy should keep the pledge to buy Green Energy.
The members discussed getting the Selectmen to take the pledge. Ron is going to see if the BS will take
the pledge at one of their meetings before Town Day. Michele suggested they do the same at one of the
RMLD's Commissioners meetings, however, will not get to them prior to Town Day.
Ray reviewed our time-line. It looks like we are on target thus far and will know better when Emily's
arrival is verified. Revisited some of the highlights and upcoming projects such as the Ipswich River Day,
July 3rd. The CCP will try to have a booth.
