June 10, 2009Reading Advisory Committee on Cities for Climate Protection Program
Committee Notes for June 10, 2009. 7PM (Next Meeting - June 24 at Town Hall)
Present were Michele Benson, Gina Snyder, Tracy Sopchak, Ron D'Addario, Sophie Gellot, Bing Xia, Ray Porter, Dee
Clark and Stephanie Anderberg.
Meeting opening -Chair Michele Benson opened the meeting.
Minutes - The minutes of the 5/13 meeting were approved with one change- to delete a line of text
accidentally copied over from an older meeting. Minutes from the 5/27 meeting were approved.
Friends and Family Day & food pledge - (6/20) The committee discussed minor edits to the 1-2-3
Pledge, and possible layout changes. Ron attended a Friends and Family Day planning meeting and reported that
the procedure is the same as for the previous year. Committee members reviewed coverage for our booth, and
Michele described the seed packets for our giveawy.
HEET meeting with Peter - Gina & Michele met with Peter regarding HEET and a possible
trial at the Mattera cabin. Over the past winter heat at the cabin failed and there was water damage, so
the cabin will be worked on by students from the voke. We should talk to the students about including
energy and environmental measures in the rehab and at the same time educate these future builders.
Meanwhile, we should talk to the housing department about possible project sites. There are 2000 names
in a local plumbing & heating directory but it only lists names and phone numbers. HEET would be
willing to help us with a kickoff meeting of contractors.
The committee discussed ideas about incorporating geo-thermal in the Mattera project, and also
solar, but there is too much shade on that site for solar to work. Also if we can't find a housing property
for a HEET project, perhaps an EMARC property would work. There will be a follow-up meeting to try
and find a property that will work. Joan is working with HEET to set up a builders' seminar.
RCAP Updates - the committee briefly discussed how to proceed with next school year's anti-
idling campaign.
Other Business - The street fair on Sept 13 would have vendor booths, with Haven St. closed,
so there will be parking and shuttle concerns.
Ray brought Union of Concerned Scientists Climate 2030 blueprint for Clean Energy Economy
for the committee to discuss.
Sophie did a presentation to the Rotary regarding e-waste, and they will form a sub-committee to
work with Reading Recycles.
Ron mentioned that Dave might be on John Russo's RCTV show in the next few weeks.
