 nr PEgO
Town of Reading RECEIVED ".
Meeting Minutes TOWN CLERK ? r.c
READING, MA.
'''wcoavoe"
2.192 APR 13 AH 9:12
Board - committee - Commission - council:
Town Forest Committee
Date: 2022-03-15 Time: 7 PM
Building: Location:
Address:
Purpose: Town Forest Management Session:
Attendees: Members - Present:
Thomas Gardiner, Kurt Habel, Susan Bowe, Brian Scouter, Tim Kirwan, Bill
Sullivan
Members - Not Present:
Jeff Lamson, Nancy Docktor
Others Present:
Brian Bowe ConCom, Meghan Bowe
Minutes Respectfully submitted By: Bill Sullivan
Topics of Discussion:
Meeting was held by video conference due to the COVID pandemic.
The Phase 2 TF cutting is complete. About 740 dead red pine trees were
removed. DPW smoothed out the ruts created during the cutting. DPW will install
more stone along the causeway (with Conservation approval). Thank you DPW!
Lessons learned by Phase 2 to be incorporated into Phase 3:
o The work should start in early January to improve the chances of frozen
ground.
o The tracked cutter had minimal impact on the roads and trails.
o State Forester Laura Dooley said that the slash left behind contributes soil
nutrients so there is no need to remove it.
o Must identify vernal pools in the contract documents and on the ground.
o The 4-5 acres is about right given the limited frozen ground window.
o Keep the chipping in the Compost Area.
Will need to reestablish the yellow trail behind the Council Ring.
Must conduct regular invasive plant removal to prevent them from taking over the
cleared areas.
Amazon Robotics offered to provide a work day. A buckthorn pull was discussed.
The Trails work day on 4/30/22 will repair boardwalks and other trail
improvements. Kurt H. will also lead a buckthorn pull.
TF Appreciation Day on 5/1/22 will include nature walks and a scavenger hunt.
Meghan Bowe will help lead the event.
• Matt Baynes will paint a mural on the side of the pump station near the Council
Ring. Thank you Matt for your art work and Susan Bowe for assisting!
• Next Meeting: scheduled for 4/12/22 at 7:00 pm
Page I 1
