All members were
present with the exception of Mary Williams. Also present were
Superintendent Robert J. Munnelly and Assistant Superintendent
Lynn M. Bak.
Chair Philbrick opened the meeting by introducing Principal John
Delaney, who in turn thanked President Spignesi and Vice President
Langone for their great support and that of Parker parents
organized as the Parker P.T.O.
PT(_HT.Tr_PT
Dr. Delaney then introduced Parker faculty member Joan Clifford
who would give a "Highlight" about the foreign language program of
the middle schools of Reading. She reviewed the philosophical
basis of the program and on the teaching methodology used in the
classrooms. In the course of her presentation, she demonstrated
the type of activities used with students, and exhibited some of
the teacher -made materials which are a key part of the coursework.
OPEN HEARING AND DISCUSSION
At this time the Chair opened up the meeting for comments from the
audience.
. A parent asked about putbacks. School Committee members
explained the putback list and the process it will take in
anticipation of money becoming available.
Another question raised by a parent was in regard to Latin as a
basic requirement for students in middle school. The Committee
advised that this was discussion of a study committee years ago.
A citizen commented about the importance of home economics and
industrial arts to middle school students.
Praise for the Foreign Language program was expressed from
another parent, who also asked if Foreign Language could be a
two year program.
Principal Delaney commented that Parker facilities are in need
of upgrading.
Another comment from a parent was in regard to standardized
testing school by school.
