READING PUBLIC SCHOOLS <br />Reading, Massachusetts <br />SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING <br />OPEN HEARING MINUTES NOVEMBER 4, 1993 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />Chair Roberta D' Antona called the open hearing to order at the <br />Killam Elementary School at 7:30 p.m. All members were pre- <br />sent. Dennis Richards the Assistant Superintendent was also <br />present. <br />WELCOME <br />The Parent Teacher Organization Co- Presidents Mary Cummings <br />and Linda Goodemote welcomed the School Committee and <br />acknowledged the dedicated teachers, principal and parents of <br />the Killam Elementary School. <br />HIGHLIGHT <br />Principal Paul Guerrette introduced the presenters, four <br />fourth grade teachers from Killam. Linda Carey discussed some <br />examples of alternative assessment. Joe Buckley outlined the <br />process that lead the teachers to consider developing <br />alternative assessment techniques. He and Ellen Zermani also <br />described their work on the Massachusetts Department of Educa- <br />tion's Mathematics Portfolio Project. Virginia Cramer <br />explained some of the assessment components of the fourth <br />grade's social studies units. Ellen Zermani discussed some of <br />the assessment ideas she learned at Harvard University <br />Department of Education's Mathematics Portfolio Project. <br />The teachers answered questions about assessment from the <br />School Committee and the parents. <br />ADJOURN <br />At 8:40 p.m. George Shannon moved to adjourn. Matthew <br />Cumminqs seconded the motion.
