READING PUBLIC SCHOOLS <br />Reading, Massachusetts <br />SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING <br />OPEN HEARING MINUTES SEPTEMBER 29, 1993 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />Chair Roberta D' Antona called the open hearing to order at the <br />Birch Meadow School at 7:35 p.m. All members were present <br />with the exception of George Shannon and Timothy Twomey. Also <br />present were Superintendent Robert J. Munnelly, Assistant <br />Superintendent Dennis A. Richards and Birch Meadow Principal <br />Richard Davidson. <br />WF.LMME <br />Principal Davidson welcomed the School Committee and the <br />Reading citizens in the audience. He introduced P.T.O. <br />President Mary Ann Kozlaski. <br />SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS <br />Principal Davidson introduced two member of the Birch Meadow <br />second grade team, Irene Bourne and Cara Gannon. They shared <br />a summary and a specific example of their year long focus on <br />"Author Studies." Mrs. Bourne and Mrs. Gannon also selected <br />various children's authors and presented indepth studies of <br />author's lives and the books they have written. They <br />continued by sharing specific activities that enhanced inte- <br />gration with other curriculum areas and the results of their <br />evaluation of the various studies. <br />Chair D'Antona complimented the teachers. <br />PUBLIC COMMENT AND QUESTIONS <br />Reading school community asked questions about how school <br />councils will play out at each school. <br />Dr. Munnelly announced the portables arrived on time at <br />the Birch Meadow building site and construction will begin <br />right away. <br />Discussion continued regarding middle school enrollments <br />and the Par -ker building project. <br />
