READING PUBLIC SCHOOLS <br />Reading, Massachusetts <br />SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING <br />LONG RANGE RETREAT MINUTES MAY 31, 1994 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />Chair Roberta D'Antona called the School Committee's long <br />range retreat meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. in the Central <br />Office Conference Room. All members were present with the <br />exception of George Shannon, who was expected to arrive later, <br />and Matthew Cummings. Also present were Superintendent Robert <br />J. Munnelly and Assistant Superintendent Dennis Richards. <br />PRIORITIES - SY 1994 -1995 <br />The School Committee reviewed materials written at their last <br />retreat session and decided to focus attention on major goals. <br />1. School Climate - Intimidation Free Schools - Safe, healthy <br />environment <br />. Education /Professional Development <br />. Accountability <br />Take the lead - Be proactive <br />Needs to be positive <br />. Action <br />. Examine existing policies <br />. Separate Sexual Harassment from Harassment <br />Directives to Administrators - Expectations - Each <br />school's effectiveness <br />Avenues to encourage communication <br />School Councils will be invited to report on this issue <br />School Committee can act as a sounding board for <br />parents with concerns <br />(Timeline - Administration to report to School Committee <br />by the end of the first quarter.) <br />2. Performance Assessment <br />Direct administration to explore ways of gathering <br />parent and student input as part of evaluation <br />process. <br />. Good businesses collect information from the customers. <br />3. Funding - Securing Sources <br />. Set goals for 1989 levels? <br />School Council Plans <br />
