READING PUBLIC SCHOOLS <br />Reading, Massachusetts <br />SCHOOL COMMITTEE MINUTES <br />BUDGET SESSION MINUTES MARCH 2, 1996 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />Chair Cummings called the regular session to order at 8:58 a.m. in the Senior Citizens' Center, <br />All School Committee members were present. Also present were Superintendent Dr. Harry K. <br />Harutunian, Associate Superintendent Dennis Richards, Finance Committee members Stephen <br />Blewitt and James Keigley. <br />FY97 BUDGET DISCUSSION <br />The Superintendent presented a $200,000 proposal to respond to the FinCom's proposal to cut <br />$175,000 out of the School Department Account. <br />Mr. Blewitt suggested that the School Committee should come to the FinCom for unanticipated <br />expenses in special education and request an amount from the reserve fund. <br />Mr. Spadafora, Mr. Twomey and Ms. D'Antona spoke in favor of the FinCom's recommendation. <br />Chair Cummings indicated we are trying to balance the budget on uncontrollable expenses. If we <br />aren't successful, we will affect instruction. <br />Superintendent amended his proposal to $175,000. <br />Mr. Twomey moved to approve the Superintendent's proposal. Ms. Cavicchi seconded the <br />motion. Mr. Stohlman suggested we not reduce electrical but take $10,000 out of oil. The <br />Superintendent proposed to eliminate the $10,000 proposed cut in Electricity/Utilities and cut <br />$110,000 in Special Education. The vote was unanimous. <br />Ms. Cavicchi Mr. Cummings, Ms. D'Antona, Mr. Spadafora, Mr. Stohlman, Mr. Twomey <br />ADJOURN <br />Ms. Cavicchi moved to return to the Joint Board Meeting.
