READING PUBLIC SCHOOLS <br />Reading, Massachusetts <br />SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING <br />SPECIAL BUDGET MEETING JANUARY 2, 1996 <br />CALL TO ORDER <br />Chairman Matthew Cummings called the School Committee's Special Budget Meeting to order at <br />T40 p.m. in the Superintendent's Conference Room. All members were present. Also present <br />were Superintendent Dr. Harry K. Harutunian, Associate Superintendent Dennis Richards, <br />FinCom Representative Tom Green and Town Accountant Richard Foley. <br />CALENDAR <br />Chair Cummings questioned if the March Teacher -In- Service (TIS) day for 1997 was the <br />Municipal Election Day. He also suggested adding one more day to the end of the school year <br />and asked to move the TIS day in November to another week. <br />Mr. Stohlman moved to reaffirm the School Year 1996 -97 calendar with the suggested changes <br />Ms. Cavicchi seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous. <br />SUPERINTENDENT'S RECOMMENDED BUDGET FOR FY97 <br />Mr. Cummings advised that we had working copies of the budget for anyone in the audience to <br />read along with the Committee. He asked that they be returned at the close of the meeting and <br />noted that additional copies for their review were in the public library and in the schools. The <br />Chair stated the Superintendent would present the budget on transparencies. <br />Superintendent Harutunian then proceeded to present the two sections of the Administration <br />Budget. <br />There was discussion with the School Committee members about the unallocated amount on <br />section B. Dr. Harutunian stated he would place an asterisk with a disclaimer at the bottom of the <br />page for the amounts that are still to be negotiated. <br />Mr. Twomey asked the Superintendent to confirm with council if there was a problem with this <br />and requested that a draft budget be created earlier next year for discussion purposes. He also <br />asked that the overtime amount be broken out so School Committee could have a clearer view. <br />Dr. Harutunian added the Technology Coordinator amount is a place holder. He added the <br />Administration needs more time to evaluate if the position would be as a coordinator or as a <br />
